I have two year old twins and I kept their Infant Car Seats, they are still in good condition. My third child is due in three months. Is it safe to use one of their old car seats for the new baby or should I go out and buy a new one?

Yes they expire! The expiration date is usually found on the car seat itself, but if not, 6 years from the manufacture date is typically considered the expiration (although some companies can be as much as 10 years from the date of manufacture). If you can’t find an expiration date or the date of manufacture, I would definitely buy a new one. It’s better to be safe than sorry!

I’m going to wind up at LAX airport with an eight month-old infant, a ton of luggage, and no car seat. We don’t know anyone who can meet us there; what are our transportation options?

Please consider finding a way to take your infant seat with you on the flight. The condition of rental agency child safety seats can range from new to horrific. Think about the care you take to keep your child safe in the car and then consider that many people do not take that same care and may have treated the seat poorly or misused it. Also the rental company may not be aware of recalls or expiration dates for their seats.

If you must rent a seat at a car rental agency, call ahead and speak to a manager. Ask the manager about the condition, age and brand/model of the seat(s) they have available. Ask what they do with seats that have been (even minor) accidents (seats should be destroyed). Ask if the manual is with the seat so you can properly install and use the seat. Ask if labels and safety information is still attached to the seat. Ask if you can reserve a specific seat for the dates you will be renting. Some rental agents will not be quick to help but ask to speak to someone else or call back at another time until you find someone who will take you seriously and help you.

When I buy an infant car seat that is also a carrier do I have to buy a base for it to be used as a car seat? Do I need to buy anything else with it?

It will most likely come with a base. However, you can see from the quote below that it can be used without it and it is *not* less safe to do so. This quote is taken from a site run by car seat experts and discusses the plusses and minuses of installation with and without the base (capitals added for emphasis):

"In crash tests, PROPERLY USED SEATS TESTED SLIGHTLY BETTER WITHOUT A BASE. HOWEVER, this does not mean you should run out and buy a seat without a base. If you have a base, once it’s installed, you’re done. Simply latch the seat into the base every time and make sure it’s latched in. If you don’t, you will have to CORRECTLY install your car seat every time you want to go somewhere. While some car seat/vehicle combinations make this easy, most do not. You have to decide whether you really think you are going to be able to correctly install your seat every time. That includes all the times you’re running late or just have to run to the store quickly. Even if you plan to leave your infant seat in the car all the time, a base may still be a better choice. A baseless seat installs with the seat belt over the top of the seat, so getting baby in if the seat is already buckled in can be difficult, meaning you will still have to re-install the seat for each ride."

Video review. BabbaCOver an infant carrier seat cover. It is simple, functional and super cute. When its cold or windy outside, what do you do? You throw a blanket over the car seat handle, but it never works. The blanket keeps falling off, cold air blows through, you dont have a firm grip on the handle, and you cant see what the baby is doing.
No more fumbling with blankets or bulky seat liners to keep your baby warm, dry, and protected.
Create a nap time environment while eating out or taking a walk.

Continue living your on-the-go lifestyle and create a protected at-home feeling for your baby.

Fits all standard infant car seat carriers!

One site says "britax, evenflo and some graco" but I’m wondering if anyone has a different brand that works. Or if anyone knows which Graco will fit. Thanks!!

I don’t know.
I am just basking in the glow of your Phil & Teds stroller.
I am sooooo coveting one.

You might try taking the stroller to babies R us and trying out various car seats.

I am looking into the Combi Zeus Convertible Car Seat but also want info on other infant seats. I have read recalls where some detached from the base during accidents.

I use both the government site and Consumer Reports. You might have to join Consumer Reports online to use theirs but not sure.

www. consumerreports.com

The government site is free. They have an "ease of use" rating on over 78 seats.

http://www.nhtsa.gov/

Click on their "child safety seat" section on the left.

They also show you where you can get the seat put in for you. They do a great job! I recommend that!

Good Luck!

With the Graco Infant Snugride (the seat we’ve been using for the last 4 months), we were able to purchase an extra car seat base for our 2nd car, but I’m not sure how the infant/toddler convertible seats work. My husband and I swap dropping off and picking up with our daycare and I’m confused as to how this will work once our baby boy graduates to the infant/toddler convertible car seat.

Help!

Convertible seats don’t have bases, so yes, you will need a seat properly installed in each car for your child.

If you want the option of using a base for a bit longer, Graco SafeSeat 1 is an infant bucket-style seat that goes until 30 lbs, and clips into a base like the Snugride does (different base of course, but the same idea).

Or, you and your hubby could swap cars so that you only have a seat in one car, though that is likely not as practical.

I heard they really don’t offer any real protection and 10 out of 12 will fail in a 35mph crash. I could see how this was all a hustle between the manufacturers and our law makers to get everyone with a small kid to buy and install one. I wonder how many Congressmen have shares in Graco, Costco, etc.?

I think you are referring to consumer reports which makes a claim along those lines.

The book freakonomics also talks about how car seats save very few lives. It says much of the same advantage can be gained by simply puting the child in the back seat.

I do think it is a scam since the age and weight that children must be to not use a car seat keeps increasing without any real benefit.
